The River Roding
rises on the southern edge of the East Anglian Heights
at Molehill Green at 107 metres above sea level. It flows
80 kms south to meet the River Thames at Barking. It is
a small lowland river which drains a long & narrow, mainly
clay catchment area (river basin) of 342 km2 in western
Essex. The average channel width is 7.5 m and the river
bed comprises mainly clay or gravel. The average rainfall
in the catchment is 606 mm which is one of the lowest
in Britain. The catchment is dominated by agriculture
in the middle and upper catchment but heavily urbanised
in the south.
